The experts who thought that Wissahickon was the second coming of Halling after his win in the Cambridgeshire last year may have been right judging by his stylish victory in the Listed Betway Winter Derby Trial.

Frankie Dettori jetted in from Bahrain for his first domestic ride of the year in the Winter Derby warm-up and his mount looked a flying machine when burning off old foe Big Country.

After sitting third off a pace set by his stablemate Court House, the John Gosden trained chestnut found himself shut in by Big Country up the straight but had the gears to go the long way around and still win easily, despite carrying a 3lb penalty.
