Shaara makes further headlines for Shadwell with victory in annual feature
Wednesday: Yarmouth
Just an hour after a major announcement about future plans for their superstar Baaeed, Jim Crowley and the Shadwell team grabbed further headlines for the operation when Shaara landed the 30th running of the featured Listed John Musker Fillies' Stakes.
The roll of honour outside the weighing room showed that no filly had ever won the race twice, and so it remains after last year's scorer Ville De Grace was swamped at the furlong pole having looked likely to collect.
Early leader Mise En Scene looked like she would get back up to land the spoils, but was undone by the persistent winner, who prevailed by just a nose after coming wide down the straight.
Winning trainer John Gosden had bagged the seasonal highlight five times previously, but this was the first out of Clarehaven in tandem with his son Thady.
It was also a third win in the 1m2f contest for Shadwell, including Asawer in 2005 when ridden to victory by Richard Hills, who 17 years later was on hand to greet the winner here.
The assistant racing manager to Shadwell Estate said: "Shaara has progressed well this season and that was a very pleasing performance. She's only been beaten the once when we ran her on bad ground and over the wrong trip.
"We've taken our time with her and that's four out of five now which isn't bad. That's a Listed win in the bag and the plan is to keep her in training next year when hopefully she could make Group class."
Lord of Yarmouth
The 7f maiden on the card has thrown up some decent performers in the past, including multiple Group winner Regal Reality, and this year's victor Lord Of Biscay could eventually be in that bracket.
The Newmarket two-year-olds have really appreciated getting on to the turf gallops again after the recent rains, including Roger Varian's team, and the winner is bred for the job as he is a half-brother to classy stablemate Bayside Boy, who completed a good day for the family when winning a Listed race at Sandown later in the afternoon.
Winning jockey Andrea Atzeni came with a long steady run on Lord Of Biscay to take the lead off favourite Obelisk and Sea Eagle.
He said: "He's a real nice type and will get a mile no problem on that. I followed the second for most of the way and he's done that nicely."
Atzeni later doubled up when Good Birthday landed the 1m1f handicap for Andrew Balding and King Power Racing.
Wish a seaside wonder
It was fitting Priscilla's Wish registered a victory at the track's biggest meeting of the year as she is already the winningmost horse at the Norfolk course for 2022.
The 9-4 favourite likes nothing more than a trip to the seaside and was registering a four-timer at Yarmouth this year with another dominant display for her trainer Charlie McBride.
The success over Hot Chestnut and a win in the finale on Time Step also put jockey Harry Davies two ahead in the race for the apprentice title.
McBride said of his filly: "She's been a real star for us and loves it here. We were a bit worried about coming back in trip, but we knew she'd won over six furlongs on soft at Lingfield.
"I don't know where we go next as they aren't racing again here again until October."
