Scat fends off Barossa Red to rule as King of the Fibresand

The mile maiden did not look a straightforward contest to solve but Scat King relished the switch to Fibresand to run out a comfortable six-length winner under Shane Kelly for trainer Richard Hughes.

Scat King was Hughes' sole runner at the Nottinghamshire track and the son of the late Scat Daddy put the race to bed in the blink of an eye on his first start of the season to defeat the 6-4 favourite Barossa Red.

Hughes said: "He did a few things wrong last year when he was a colt and being gelded has just taken the fizziness out of him. He settled far better today and I think he can keep improving."
