On the face of it Emma Sayer’s success in the new £20,000 Betfred Haydock Park Ladies’ Trophy Handicap was a dream result for everyone concerned.

Having won at Carlisle’s all-girls card on Monday, Sayer was one of only two riders eligible for the bonus of a £20,000 development award and she got the Jockey Club Racecourses initiative off to the perfect start when steering the Brian Ellison-trained I Am Not Here to victory.

The 24-year-old rider, who has ridden more than 50 winners on the Flat and over jumps, punched the air in delight and sported a huge smile in the winner’s enclosure but after picking up the cheque revealed she is cutting back her appearances in the saddle.
