Royal Ascot-bound Army Of India becomes first two-year-old winner in Britain

We may have been forced to wait a little longer than usual for the first two-year-old race of the British Flat season, but there was a familiar outcome as Mark Johnston was the first trainer to strike thanks to Army Of India's success in the 6f maiden at Kempton.

The winner was one of 11 horses nominated by Johnston to the BHA when trainers were asked to submit lists of two-year-olds they wanted to be exempt from elimination in the expectation that races would be oversubscribed and he lived up to his home reputation with a short-head defeat of Science.

"We fancied him strongly and would have been disappointed if he wasn't there or thereabouts," said winning rider Joe Fanning.
