Rollercoaster day on the coast for Birkett with winner before hospital stay

Shelley Birkett experienced the highs and lows of racing in the space of 65 minutes when a welcome winner was followed by a crashing fall in which she dislocated her hip and broke her collar bone.

Birkett, who had an accident at the track last year, was cheered on by a big turnout from the Newmarket Equine Tours Racing Club when Gas Monkey scored for the first time on turf in the 1m2f handicap.

Around 50 members raised a glass to the winner, who provided the second leg of a double for Birkett's mother, Newmarket trainer Julia Feilden.
