Rockfel success well timed for French trainer

Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte may be considered something of a breakthrough name in Britain, thanks to Spain Burg’s efforts in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket.

But the 46-year-old former assistant to Francois Doumen and Carlos Laffon-Parias has built a reputation for shrewd placement of his horses and is not a man to waste the diesel if travelling up to Paris from his south-western base of Mont-de-Marsan.

Thomas-Demeaulte passed the 350-winner mark in France earlier this year and his biggest win at home before the Rockfel came with another juvenile filly, the 2013 Prix des Reservoirs scorer Stellar Path.
