Relentless Rossa Ryan closes in on maiden century after 143-1 four-timer
Rossa Ryan made the most of a strong book of seven rides to land a 143-1 four-timer, propelling the Irishman closer to his first century of winners in a season.
Ryan kickstarted his day with Mick Channon's Greatness Awaits, guiding the 5-2 favourite to a comfortable success in the mile nursery before a win with the Tony Carroll-trained Bezzas Lad in the second division of the 6f handicap.
It was quickly three on the day for Ryan as Some Nightmare justified 11-4 favouritism for trainer John O'Shea, who was pleased to play a part in the jockey's success.
O'Shea said: "Rossa rode plenty of winners for me when he was a claimer and I haven't used him for a while but I was delighted to be able to get him."
The trainer is hoping to match Ryan's career-best season of 93 winners with his own record: "I think our best season is 18 and we're going to be trying hard to beat it this year.
"We have just nine Flat horses on our books, not many, but that's winner number 12. We'll keep going on the all-weather to try and get our best score."
Ryan completed the four-timer aboard the George Boughey-trained two-year-old Dirtyoldtown in the 7f novice stakes.
Russco run continues
A fifth success for Ryan was denied as the reliable Russco made it five wins in a row for Donald McCain in the 6f handicap.
Paul Mulrennan kept enough in hand to extend the McCain three-year-old's winning steak, seeing off Ryan aboard the Boughey-trained Sir Maxi by two and a half lengths.
