Red-hot Murtagh steals the show as Kelly comes up trumps in Ulster Derby

What's rare is wonderful. It is not often a trainer has nothing but nice things to say about the handicapper, especially after they have put one up 21lb, but Johnny Murtagh took Red Kelly’s hike on the chin and was rewarded with a big pot as the colt vindicated such an assessment in bagging the Ulster Derby.

A wide-margin winner of his previous start at Leopardstown, Red Kelly faced an altogether different test here at Down Royal, but he passed with flying colours to provide Murtagh with a treble on the card.

The win also brought Murtagh to the 22-winner mark for the season, meaning he is now level on last season's tally of winners despite sending out 172 fewer runners.
