Darren Bunyan has never been afraid to tell the world how good he thinks Hit The Bid is, but the horse did the talking for the Curragh-based handler on Friday night when lasting it out in the Group 3 Al Basti Equiworld Mercury Stakes under Chris Hayes.

Trying to predict which Hit The Bid was likely to turn up has been difficult this season and his trainer has been left with egg on his face on the odd occasion, but the smart sprinter showed what he is capable of producing in the hotly contested 5f feature.

“I’m delighted with him. The ground has been gone on him for his three runs since he’s come back from Dubai. We let him have the run in the Prix de l’Abbaye because he’d spent a week and a half of the previous three weeks travelling between Newbury, home and then on to France.
