Record tumbles as Kirk wings in with a high-speed winner

The jets soaring overhead from nearby Heathrow did not have the exclusivity on speed as beneath them Salouen was busy breaking the two-year-old track record.

A strong tailwind had something to do with the time that shaved 0.73 seconds off the previous best, but there was still plenty to admire as George Baker coasted home aboard the son of Canford Cliffs in the 1m½f maiden.

It was Salouen, winning on his fifth try, who looked more like the 4-11 favourite than Star Archer, more than three lengths adrift in second, and Sylvester Kirk blamed himself for the first success not coming sooner.
