On occasions horses require a whiff of oxygen after a hard race. On the other hand, a mug of hot, sweet tea for being in a state of shock was what trainer Richard Woollacott could have done with after Beer Goggles gutted out a 40-1 boilover in the alleged long-distance match between Thistlecrack and Unowhatimeanharry.

This prize was meant to go back to the Dorset empires of Tizzard or Fry, but Woollacott joyously diverted it to his 15-strong yard at Rose Ash in deepest Devon where even the most fearless Christian missionaries have yet to tread.

Confessing to being "flabbergasted", Woollacott said: "We didn't think he was that good and going down to the last I still thought they would get him."
