Former top striker Micky Quinn often had goals to celebrate on the first day of a football season, but he probably got as big a kick out of Great Hall's success in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge – his first winner at Ascot.

After all, it was the stable's biggest prize in a good while, and he had backed the seven-year-old earlier in the week at 20-1.

Quinn, who was at his most prolific with Portsmouth and Newcastle more than 25 years ago but remembers an opening-day hat-trick against Arsenal for Coventry, said: "That's a great result for us. A nice day out and a nice prize. Great Hall is our first winner at Ascot but we don't have many runners.
