If Gordon Elliott becomes champion trainer one of these years, his strike-rate at Downpatrick might just be a significant factor.

He was at it again yesterday when carding a near 51-1 treble, two of them with rider Jack Kennedy and owner Tom Doran, highlighted by landing the feature novice hurdle with the progressive Carrig Cathal.

The son of Fair Mix had every reason to be beaten here, especially as Bryan Cooper looked to have got his fractions to a tee on the front-running favourite Master Of Verse, but on the climb for home Jack Kennedy got a sustained effort from the winner to score by a length.
