The action most relevant to the imminent Newmarket Classics duly took place on the Rowley Mile on Wednesday. It just wasn't in the races themselves.

The Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes may have been worth £60,000, but connections of two fillies with designs on the Qipco 1,000 Guineas chose instead to gallop them before racing.

According to bookmakers, they were much the best fillies on show. While Soliloquy was a ready winner of the Nell Gwyn, her ante-post price remains bigger than that of Wild Illusion and Veracious, who galloped separately before deserted grandstands in contrasting fashion.
