In the weeks since he scratched Postponed from the King George due to a respiratory infection, even the outwardly calm Roger Varian had been feeling the stress.

At the height of the busiest period of the Flat season his star performer was out of action, laid low by a health issue that also brought the rate of stable runners and winners to a virtual halt.

But the Newmarket trainer could breathe in the sweet scent of success again on Wednesday after Postponed delivered a Juddmonte International Stakes victory as satisfying as any Varian has experienced.
