Pile-up chaos leads to race being declared void

In shades of Foinavon's notorious victory in the Grand National in 1967, the 3m1f handicap chase was declared void after no horse finished following a massive pile-up at the sixth fence.

No fewer than eight of the ten runners were involved in the Lord Stalbridge Memorial Cup chaos, from which only one horse came out unscathed. Unfortunately for backers of 8-1 chance Hollow Blue Sky, he could not do a Foinavon and refused down the back straight on the final circuit.

Foinavon’s rider John Buckingham passed away only last week, and one racegoer thought he may well have been looking down on the dramatic incident with a wry smile.
