Never be too quick to write something off as a waste of money – even the whitest of white elephants can turn out to be a bargain in the long run.

Ask Andrew Black and Tom Dascombe, who claimed Baldovina for £17,000 in 2007 and failed to win a race with her.

"I trained her and she was useless, then she went to David Pipe, he ran her over hurdles and she was useless again," Dascombe recalled.
