Gordon Elliott, a bonafide member of the training elite in Ireland, was unable to conquer California with Beckford in the Breeders' Cup earlier this month, but he had no trouble plundering Leicester's feature as High Expectations was delivered with ease in the hands of champion jockey Richard Johnson.

The six-year-old was a first runner at the East Midlands venue for Elliott, but anyone thinking he had thumbed the British racing calendar for this £20,000 handicap hurdle was mistaken.

"It was my idea," said winning owner Martin Wasylocha. "Today's my birthday as well so I thought we'd come here, win this and Bob's your uncle."
