One of sport's oldest adages is that the best teams or individuals manage to find a way to win ugly when called on.

To call Pinatubo's win in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes ugly would be doing the horse a disservice, but it did lack the fireworks of his previous two successes.

However, there was still a certain beauty to it. Many horses can beat inferior opponents on the bridle and look potential superstars. The best may possess that trait, but crucially can also dig deep and produce a little extra when challenged by more capable rivals.
