Few handicappers win six races in a year but Pepys is obviously the exception to most rules after he bravely responded to Graham Lee’s driving to hold off the persistent attentions of Make Me and take the first division of the 7f handicap.

Bryan Smart’s charge had been raised a total of 21lb since his first victory of 2018 at Newcastle in April. He has never been out of the prize-money in ten starts this year and Lee has been in the saddle for five of his six successes.

The jockey, who was partnering his 45th winner of the season, said: “He has done great as he is as hard as nails. He is a credit to himself and to Bryan along with all the staff back at home as he never knows when he is beaten.
