Patience pays off for Ger Lyons as Marbling earns black type in Brownstown

Jockey Gary Carroll landed his first Group winner of the season with a brilliant ride on the Ger Lyons-trained Marbling in a pulsating Irish Stallion Farms EBF Brownstown Stakes.

The five-year-old daughter of Kingman, who had run a cracker in a premier handicap at the Curragh on Irish Derby day, put in a career-best performance to notch her second win since joining Lyons last season.

Carroll still had plenty to do on the mare with two furlongs to go, but his mount responded to his every urging, flying down the outside to defeat Nectaris in a photo-finish.

Lyons said: “She’s great. We've always had faith in Marbling, we just didn't know what trip was her best. Gary said if he had been beaten it would have been his fault, as he pulled the stick through and she wandered a bit.

“The likes of her and Sh Boom that we keep in training, we know they're black type, it's just a question of where we can get it. It's very competitive over here and I'm not a great man for travelling, so when we get it here, we earn it. It's important for her and it’s a job well done.”

Smart prospect

Eddie and Patrick Harty celebrated their third winner of the season in the opening 6f fillies' maiden and in Coralillo they have a very exciting filly.

The daughter of Havana Grey clocked one of the fastest times at the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-Up sale in May, and the €80,000 confirmed that promise with a length success on debut. The Ballyhane Stakes at Naas is the next target on August 1.

Patrick Harty said: “It was money well spent. We went to three breeze-ups in England and got outbid at them all. We came back to Ireland and we really liked everything about Coralillo when we saw her.

“She was maybe a little over budget, but we just really like her. We'll focus on the Ballyhane first and then think about some black type with her later in the season.”

Weekend winners

Wayne Lordan, fresh from a double at Navan on Saturday, continued a fine weekend as he steered his third winner in 24 hours aboard Ampeson in the 6f handicap.

The Pat McKenna-trained five-year-old relished the strong pace and never looked like being beaten once taking it up with a furlong to go, ultimately running out a comfortable winner by two and three-quarter lengths.

McKenna said: “We took Wayne's advice after the last day to come back in trip. Our system seems to do that the way we work them at home.

"He won well and we'll keep him going. It's only a part-time job, we're in it for the fun, so this is all a bonus when you're competing.”
