Paddys Motorbike has been through it all in his career, from early days on the Flat for David Evans through a switch to hurdling and multiple lengthy layoffs, but he continues to handle whatever is thrown at him with aplomb as he made a successful debut over fences at the age of nine in the 2m½f novice handicap chase.

The 11-length victory under Sam Twiston-Davies continued the hot form of trainer Sam Thomas, who has struck with three of his last six runners.

Thomas said: "He's been an absolute star throughout his career. We wanted to go novice chasing just to open a few more doors because he didn't have much left up his sleeve over hurdles in terms of rating.

"He's such an enthusiastic little horse and that's exactly what we thought he'd do. He's not getting any younger so we have to look after him."

Grandeur money well placed

After opening at 7-4 on debut for trainer Alan King in the 2m maiden hurdle, Grandeur D'Ame justified strong market support when recording a 20-length victory under Gavin Sheehan at odds of 4-7 for owners Kate and Andrew Brooks.

A bumper winner for Oliver Sherwood last year, Grandeur D'Ame was untidy at his first two hurdles but settled well thereafter, although his task was made significantly simpler when main rival Hermes Bellevue unseated Harry Cobden three out.

Terrific Tommie

A 157-day absence and a switch to fences made no dent in the momentum of Tommie Beau, who brought up a four-timer for trainer Seamus Mullins in the 3m novice handicap chase.
