It is a sound that has not gone unheard at Cheltenham, but it is still deeply jarring when it hits.

The collective shock of 70,000-odd as a well fancied, and home for all money, favourite parts with jockey at the last makes for a deeply affecting noise – part gasp, part shriek, part groan. Total disappointment.

This time it was Goshen and Jamie Moore. Like Annie Power and Benie Des Dieux in years gone by they came to the last with the race at their mercy. Moore did not realise just how far clear they were. Goshen had kicked in the afterburners and they went into the hurdle the best part of ten lengths clear.
