Rain poured all over them. One particular drop, keen for its moment of fame, rolled all the way down Tony Marlow's nose before plummeting to the ground. He and the whole group were soaked but they were also squeezed on to Aintree's winner's podium, so this was the happiest of drenchings.

There had been similar scenes at Cheltenham when the Triumph Hurdle was claimed at 20-1 by Pentland Hills, who this month last year finished eighth in a low-grade Yarmouth handicap.
