'One of my best days' - Niall Moore lands memorable 62-1 Down Royal double
Monday: Down Royal
Niall Moore made the most of his two rides at Down Royal with his first double on Eye Van and Kalanisi Dubh.
The Ray Cody-trained Eye Van justified 2-1 favouritism in the opening maiden hurdle, staying on to beat Jimmy Chou Pecos Aa by four lengths.
“He’s shown his class there,” Moore told Racing TV. “He’s a nice one to have. This horse has got class. If he steps up in trip, I’m sure he’ll improve.”
The young rider followed up on first reserve Kalanisi Dubh in the 2m1f handicap hurdle at 20-1 for trainer Seamus Fahey.
“She was a lovely spare ride to get,” said Moore. “It’s great to do it for a small trainer and owner at Christmas. It’s what they live for. Today is one of the best days I’ve had.”
Chase confusion
Innovated (16-1) won a drama-filled beginners' chase after the Willie Mullins-trained Chavez made an early departure.
Riders seemed in two minds whether or not to jump the broken second-last fence, going around it and forcing a member of the ground staff to move quickly out of the way.
The Gigginstown-owned Innovated stayed on well amid the drama, to score for jockey Conor Brassil and trainer Henry de Bromhead.
Vaucelet revenge
The 2-1 shot Vaucelet reversed the form of last year’s race, seeing off Dorking Cock to land the 3m hunter chase for trainer David Christie. The runner-up laboured towards the line and was beaten by a neck.
