The star attraction had nothing to do with racing and didn’t even turn up – but there was still a bustle to the meeting as Uttoxeter’s townsfolk came out in force to celebrate their most famous sporting son, Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Adam Peaty.

Many of the near 3,500-strong crowd made the most of the free entry offer for those with a local postcode and the 3m beginners’ chase was named in honour of the 21-year-old, who posted a new 100m breaststroke world record and won silver in the medley relay in Rio last month.
