A group of German schoolchildren having a first visit to a British racecourse must have wondered what it was all about when the first two races ended in drama.

First odds-on Jumping Jack, leading when coming to the second-last in the maiden hurdle, jinked left and unseated Tom Cannon.

Then Good News, in front when approaching the last in the 3m1f handicap hurdle, also headed towards the picnickers in the centre of the course, parting company with Jack Sherwood.
