Mildenberger was all the rage in the betting market before the Listed Stonehenge Stakes, but the 11-10 favourite made his backers sweat before finally knuckling down to take the spoils in a three-way driving finish.

The Mark Johnston-trained two-year-old looked beaten a furlong out but rallied strongly inside the final 100 yards to catch and beat long-time leader Albishr by a nose, with Tigre Du Terre three-quarters of a length back in third.

Johnston and winning rider Franny Norton teamed up to land the contest 12 months ago with Montataire and the jockey admitted afterwards that he was not certain he had got there and was relieved to hear his number called by judge Nick Bostock.
