Paul Nicholls knows he will not win the trainers' championship in October, but he nevertheless has made an emphatic declaration of intent at the challenge his rivals face in taking his crown.

A double at Fontwell yesterday took him to 18 victories for the month – 13 of them from his previous 20 runners – and there will no doubt be plenty more to come.

As De Mee, campaigned at the highest level over fences last season without recording a win, finally opened his account in the beginners' chase and Movewiththetimes looked a fine prospect with victory on his hurdling debut in the opener.
