Donald McCain could be forgiven for thinking the gods are firmly against him.

After three weeks with no runners due to the outbreak of equine influenza in his yard, he looked to have a sound chance of having his first winner since he was given the all-clear with Constancio in the 1m7½f novice hurdle.

The market agreed as the Elite Racing Club's six-year-old, the mount of Brian Hughes, was sent off at 1-2 to beat his four rivals.
