As part of his end-of-season fightback against Nicky Henderson, reigning champion trainer Paul Nicholls is assembling a customary strong team of horses for Ayr’s Scottish National meeting next month and Clan Des Obeaux will be one of those heading north from Somerset.

The five-year-old made up for what his trainer described as a “mid-season blip” when flopping at Sandown last month with a workmanlike performance to wear down Drumlee Sunset and come clear in the 2m3f novice chase.

Nicholls said: “He was obviously not right when he ran at Sandown at the beginning of February and might have gone through a mid-season blip. He just did not jump that day and was never firing - I know some of ours were wrong at the time but he seemed fine in himself.
