Newland rattles off a double after the meeting survives an early scare

Racing at the Midlands circuit survived an early scare in the 2m½ novice handicap chase after Phoenix Rock lost her footing and slipped up on the bend heading into the back straight.

The eventual winner Overtoujay also appeared to slip on the same part of the course and remedial work was quickly carried out after some of the jockeys voiced concerns following the race.

Clerk of the course Nessie Chanter said: “The bend on that part of the course on the chase track is on virgin ground as we have not raced on it this summer. We had a drop of rain in the morning before racing and it seemed to have made it a little greasy.
