Oisin Murphy is now champion jockey for at least a year. Judging by what he said on his day of coronation, and crucially what others said about him, he could be flying racing's flag in an even more important way for much longer than that.

When the 24-year-old was interviewed in the Racing Post last month he spoke candidly about how he had yearned to be champion for many years. "I was living it, breathing it, dreaming it," he said, adding: "If it doesn't happen, It doesn't happen."

But it did happen – and so many people were thrilled to see it happen.
