Saturday: Navan

The last time Willie Mullins trained a winner for Gigginstown was Devils Bride in the summer of 2016, but their relationship has been reconciled recently and Shanbally Kid provided them with their first winner since getting back together.

It came in the 2m4f maiden hurdle but was not entirely straightforward for the 11-10 favourite, although he was always doing enough on the run-in and Paul Townend is convinced there is more to come.

He said: "He's still quite a raw individual. I settled the race really quickly and then he was just doing enough. I'd say there is a bit more in the tank. The further he went the better he jumped and he should progress again. You'd be going out in trip with him rather than back."

With that in mind, some punters might be tempted by the 40-1 still being offered with bet365 for the Albert Bartlett.

Double for Donoghue

It has been a tough week for Keith Donoghue, who lost his grand uncle Andy Lynch on Wednesday, but he added another two winners to his best season on Path D'Oroux and Pure Sirloin, both trained by Gavin Cromwell.

Path D'Oroux has been contesting Grade 1s but benefited from the drop in class to land the opening rated novice hurdle, which proved to be a dramatic affair.

Landrake came down at the third-last and brought down the strong-travelling favourite Spirit Of Legend, while Intranet was pulled up between the final two flights and suffered a fatal injury.

The familiar Flooring Porter colours were carried to victory by Pure Sirloin, who edged out Gold Haven in a driving finish to the 2m4f handicap hurdle.

Seahorse to set sail for festival

HMS Seahorse stayed on to land the feature Navan Handicap Hurdle and Paul Nolan is now eyeing a handicap at Cheltenham.

The trainer said: "We might look at the Coral Cup with him. That's where the lads would love to go. We'd have to look at a Pertemps qualifier as well. It would be great to have more options, but that might be tight enough to get him qualified. His jumping has definitely improved."

National Hunt mission for Mahler

Mahler Mission jumped impeccably in the 3m beginners' chase and was cut to 12-1 (from 33) for the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham by Paddy Power.

John McConnell said: "He just loves it. He's very clever for a big horse, he can go in and fiddle. He just gallops and jumps and he's just decent. We put him in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham this week and we'll certainly look at it."
