It was a festive fourth-time lucky for Mount Tahan, with the Kevin Ryan-trained handicapper ending a run of three second-placed finishes on the all-weather with victory in the £20,000 1m1½f feature contest.

Shane Gray’s mount, previously second twice at Chelmsford and a runner-up at Wolverhampton, went one better for the first time on the all-weather with a half-length win in a race won by Second Wave and Forceful Appeal in recent years.

Ryan said: “This race reopened last week so we thought it would be worth putting him in, and everything went right.
