Bell counting the cost after burst pipes cause extensive grandstand damage

Temperatures may finally be on the rise after the big freeze but Chepstow is still counting the cost with the main grandstand closed to the public after burst pipes resulted in flooding on all three floors.

Alternative facilities were made available to racegoers and chief executive Phil Bell expects the mopping-up operation to carry on over the coming weeks.

He said: “A pipe burst on the top floor of the grandstand and it flooded through for 48 hours, resulting in around 25 per cent of the stand being affected, including some hospitality boxes, the restaurant and two bars.
