Modus stamps himself a smart novice in Rising Stars Chase

It might have only been a three-runner contest for the Grade 2 Rising Stars Novice Chase, but Modus stamped himself a potential leading light over fences when easily seeing off main market rival Kalondra.

Given a patient ride by Sam Twiston-Davies, the seven-year-old’s challenge was delayed until the last two fences where he readily asserted with a big leap, before drawing clear for a nine-length call in the John Romans-sponsored contest.

Winning trainer Paul Nicholls said: “It was the first time that we've not fitted the horse with a hood for a while and he has relaxed a lot better. He's always been a proper horse, as he won the Lanzarote over hurdles, and could be even better over fences.
