Jockey Jonathan Burke could be forgiven for thinking his first Cheltenham winner would never materialise, but Mister Whitaker ended his losing sequence with a bold display to land the Grade 2 handicap chase.

Burke passed a half century of losers at Prestbury Park last month and the look on his face said it all after the Mick Channon-trained seven-year-old found what was required to hold off the late attentions of Got Away for a neck victory.

The rider said: “It had become a hoodoo which was beginning to really bug me and get under my skin, so it obviously feels like a huge relief that I have finally got it off my back.
