Mick Quinn: struck with his two runners at Brighton

Mick Quinn scored twice at Brighton as sprinters Invincible Larne and Recall The Show landed competitive handicaps under Pat Cosgrave.

Invincible Larne, who was sent off at 5-1, kicked off the double when rattling home inside the final furlong to deny Boom The Groom in a three-way finish to the 5½f handicap, which was decided by a photo.

"He nearly won at Chelmsford at the end of last year so I knew he had the speed," said Quinn. "They went quickly and he needed the hill to get up but, as ever, he just did enough to get his nose in front."

Recall The Show, who like his stablemate is owned by Kenny Bruce, won over course and distance ten days ago and completed the double when winning the 6f handicap by half a length from Vape.

"He was a big, heavy colt last year but is moving a lot better," said Quinn. "He's done it well. He's had an uninterrupted run this season and we'll hopefully have a crack at a decent handicap with him."

Quinn, who trains ten horses, added: "It's great to have a double on the day. The sun's out and they're two lovely sprinters – get in!"

Impressive performance

Nicola Currie could not help but be impressed by Navello after he made light work of a penalty to easily land the 5½f novice contest.

The two-year-old, who conceded 7lb to the newcomers in the field after winning at Wolverhampton last time, stormed clear of the 5-6 favourite Golden Rainbow to win by four lengths for George Boughey.

"I'm impressed," said Currie. "He learnt on the job last time and has grown up since. He really tried when he hit the rising ground today. When you ask the question, he puts his head down for you."

Navello provided Boughey with his 27th winner of the season, one more than he achieved in 2020, and the trainer said: "Navello keeps improving. His dam won on her first start over seven so he'll get better as he steps up in trip. He's a nice horse going forwards."

First winner

Aidan Keeley got off the mark at the seventh attempt aboard The Whipmaster for trainer Gary Moore in the 7f apprentice handicap.

The 7lb claimer is the grandson of Brian Rouse, who won the 1980 1,000 Guineas aboard Quick As Lightning, as well as a Japan Cup.

Ice-cool ride

It was a great day's work for Luke Catton as he struck on his only ride of the day with Desert Land in the 6f handicap.

The seven-year-old dwelt breaking from the stalls and was at the back of the field entering the straight but was delivered powerfully by the 7lb claimer to finish half a length clear of De Little Engine.
