Given the line-up for the 2017 Christmas Chase, the hope before the race was that the Grade 1 would provide more answers than questions.

By the time 66-1 shot Balko Des Flos led over the final fence at Leopardstown on Thursday from fellow Gigginstown Stud representatives Road To Respect and Outlander, it was clear that was unlikely to be the case.

That’s not to denigrate in any way Road To Respect’s triumph, but by then the two big guns who dominated the pre-race build-up were labouring hopelessly in the rear.
