Petrus followed up his victory in the Spring Mile at Doncaster by narrowly landing the £50,000 mile handicap from Salute The Soldier, and trainer Brian Meehan is now eyeing a tilt at the Royal Hunt Cup.

The trainer said: "He's not a horse to get there too soon and Martin [Dwyer] timed it to perfection. Now all roads will lead to Ascot in June, although there's a likelihood he'll have another run somewhere in between.

"His owner Giles Morland was lucky enough to also own Bacchus, who won the Wokingham at Royal Ascot last June, and now he's got a taste for the place it makes sense to end up there with this horse."
