With the mud slinging and rain lashing down, it wasn't a surprise to see a former jump jockey make more than one appearance in the winner’s enclosure, as PJ McDonald continued his phenomenal season with victory on Shovel It On in the 7f nursery and Peach Melba in the 7f handicap.

More than a decade has passed since ‘PJ’ landed the Scottish National on Hot Weld in 2007, but since switching to the Flat for good the following year he has consistently partnered more than 50 winners a year, and, after riding his 69th and 70th winner of 2017, last year’s personal best of 80 is firmly in his sights.

“Things are going well,” said the rider after a quick towel down after his first winner.
