The day’s main event was being run for a second time in memory of former course chairman Joe Walsh and history repeated itself in uncanny fashion.

When the €21,000 3m conditions hurdle first carried the name of Walsh, the influential former minister for agriculture with a renowned passion for racing, it was won by Simenon for the Willie Mullins-Ruby Walsh axis. A game Bowe family filly, High Nellie, took second, with a Gigginstown contender third in Bright New Dawn.

And the same combination graced the winner's enclosure as Walsh guided the imposing Coquin Mans to a straightforward odds-on success for Mullins.
