Madgwick's Big 'n Better proves no fluke as previous 100-1 scorer strikes again
Big 'n Better surprised many when winning at 100-1 at Fontwell in March, and while there were no three-figure prices this time he still caused a minor shock with a fine front-running performance in the 2m5½f handicap chase.
The nine-year-old forced the pace and some brilliant leaps plus some intelligent raceriding from Marc Goldstein left their rivals toiling in their wake to register an easy 11-length success for local trainer Michael Madgwick.
"It was a joy to watch," said Madgwick. "He schooled so well at home that I said to Marc that he didn't need to come down and sit on him. That's the first time Marc has ever jumped a fence on him – I said just point him at the fences and he'll put himself right.
"That was the plan all along, we knew he would stay and I told Mark don't hold on to him, let him bowl along and enjoy himself."
Victory opened Hampshire-based Madgwick's account for the new season and provided him with a first victory since Big n' Better's previous shock success.
He added: "It's hard to get winners. He's had a few problems, but he was always going to be much better over fences because he jumps so well. Long may it last."
Brilliant Ben
Ben Jones had to be similarly inspired in the saddle to galvanise Max Dynamo to win the 3m2f handicap chase and provide trainer Emma-Jane Bishop with her first winner in 442 days.
