Long journey to Newton Abbot pays off for Nicky Richards

The decision to send Caius Marcius on the 684-mile round trip from Greystoke Stables to Newton Abbot proved worthwhile for Nicky Richards as the eight-year-old won a valuable novice chase at the Devon course.

His success under Brian Hughes was a first at the track for Cumbria-based trainer Richards, who was having just his second runner at Newton Abbot.

Despite the winning incentive of just over £11,300, Ennistown and Al Shahir offered the only opposition and after taking up the lead three fences from home, Caius Marcius was pushed clear to win by four and a half lengths.
