Living Legend sets up Coronation Cup bid as outsider stuns 1-4 favourite Yibir
Friday: Newmarket
Living Legend lived up to his name when turning over Breeders' Cup Turf winner Yibir in the feature Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes on day one of the newly extended Qipco Guineas Festival.
Successful and enthusiastic joint-owner Barbara Richmond was celebrating Group-race glory for the first time when the 11-1 chance turned over the 1-4 market leader for a fifth success in the race for joint-trainer Mark Johnston, but a first in his new partnership with son Charlie.
"Legend by name, legend by nature, but they say never run away from one horse," he said. "It's Barbara's first Group winner and as normal I didn't give any instructions to the jockey, but Barbara gave him a long talking to in which she principally said we weren't here for a laugh!"
As for the future, Richmond has it all worked out according to Johnston, who added: "Even before this race, Barbara had been looking at how much it was to supplement for the Coronation Cup and she said he'd go there if he won this."
On Yibir, trainer Charlie Appleby said: "The plan is to head to the Man O’War Stakes in two weeks' time. We came here to get a run in before America and we knew coming in it was one of those races that might not go his way. "
Nations in a different league
William Buick continued his fine form with a double, kicking off when Nations Pride pulverised his three rivals in the Listed Newmarket Stakes.
The 7-4 chance was not for passing to give Buick and trainer Charlie Appleby a third win in the 1m2f contest after Hawkbill scored in 2016 before Key Victory won in 2018.
Appleby said: "I was not surprised by that and he's the sort of horse that may be even better over a mile and a half. He's not in the Derby but we're keeping all the options open for him, but it could well be he ends up at Royal Ascot."
The pair followed up when Noble Truth produced a dominant front-running display in the Listed King Charles II Stakes.
Appleby added: "It was our plan to keep away from the others and William gave him a great ride. This looks his trip and the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot could be the race for him."
Local joy
Former Newmarket student Harry Davies enjoyed a day to remember when winning on his first ride on the Rowley Mile on Shine So Bright in the £50,000 7f handicap.
Davies said: "I was really pleased when I heard I'd got my first ride at Newmarket and to cross the line in front was a great thrill. "
Ascot dreaming
Clipper Logistics boss Steve Parkin could be dreaming of another Royal Ascot winner after the 5f fillies maiden was won in spectacular fashion by his homebred Dramatised.
The daughter of Showcasing earned a quote of 10-1 from Paddy Power for the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes following her four-length success.
