The Group 3 Criterion Stakes was run on a different track at Newmarket for the first time in its history but the result remained familiar as veteran speedster Limato reprised his win of a year ago when the race was run at its usual home, the July course.

Henry Candy's stable legend defied the years to put up one of his most impressive displays despite turning eight in January. In the absence of regular partner Harry Bentley, Adam Kirby had a first sit on the 5-1 chance and made the most of it in producing the former July Cup winner with his trademark late burst.

Ridden cold as usual, Limato was not anywhere to be seen early doors off a breakneck pace set by Mubtasim, but he loomed into contention at the Bushes before going clear for a three-and-a-half-length success over Happy Power.
