Late drama as Skelton crashes out to hand feature to outsider Sir Tivo
Tuesday: Southwell
There was late drama in the 2m handicap chase as Sir Tivo was handed victory by the fall of Stepney Causeway, who looked to have the contest at his mercy under Harry Skelton when coming to grief at the second-last fence.
Skelton had put ten lengths between him and his two rivals and was still on the bridle when pecking on landing, leaving the Gary Hanmer-trained eight-year-old to run out a lucky six-length winner.
Jockey Sean Bowen, who recovered from a horrendous mistake at the first and a blunder at the last to partner the 11-2 shot to victory, said: "Gary is a lucky trainer!
"Sir Tivo made a mistake early on and it took me a while to get him back into a rhythm, but then he got into a nice one. I don't know what it is but, if his mind is off the game, he's a bit stupid with it.
"Coming down to the last I thought he was on one [a stride] and he didn't. At least he got from one side to the other."
The pair doubled up when Hillview ran out a comfortable winner of the 3m½f handicap hurdle. The six-year-old had been awarded a race over course and distance last month but needed no help from the stewards this time, being eased down to an 11-length victory.
Southwell specialist
Debden Bank bounced back to form after being pulled up on his last two starts to remain unbeaten over fences at Southwell. The Martin Keighley-trained eight-year-old pulled out a good jump at the last to win by four and a quarter lengths from the Hanmer-trained Steel Wave.
