Last year's Woodcote winner Twaasol bounces back under Jim Crowley
Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum recorded a one-two in the mile classified contest but not in the order punters might have expected as 2020 Woodcote winner Twaasol narrowly denied the 9-4 favourite Ajyaal.
The 9-1 shot was ridden by Jim Crowley, who had already teamed up with the trainer of the runner-up, William Haggas, to land the 6f novice stakes aboard the Shadwell Estate-owned Khanjar.
However, the jockey left the Newmarket trainer frustrated as he delivered Twaasol to score by three-quarters of a length, his first success since winning under Martin Harley at Epsom in 2020.
The winning trainer, Owen Burrows, said: "He’s probably his own worst enemy after winning the Woodcote last year. He’s been high enough in the weights but that was a good performance.
"I think he may be moving out to Dubai to be trained for Sheikh Ahmed. That was mentioned before the race so I doubt the plans would change but we’ll see."
Crowley completed his treble when steering Prontissimo to a cosy length-and-a-half success in the 6f handicap. In doing so, he provided trainer Patrick Owens with his sixth career success.
Run romps home
There was another boost to the form of Hukum's Geoffrey Freer victory as Recovery Run, who finished sixth, powered to a four-length success in the 1m4f handicap under David Probert.
Recovery Run finished almost eight lengths behind the Shadwell-owned four-year-old at Newbury last month, while the fourth-placed horse, Without A Fight, won at Haydock on Thursday.
Bryn bounces back
Frankie Dettori made the most of his first two rides of the month with a double for trainers John and Thady Gosden.
Uncle Bryn, running for the first time since finishing last in the Dante back in May and being gelded, won the mile handicap, while Saga got off the mark at the third time of asking in the 7f maiden.
